Do Buyers Place Greater Trust in People or in the Brand?

This data set set out to settle an argument the industry has been having for years. Do lubricant buyers choose the company, or the person who turns up on behalf of it?

The finding is more useful than a simple answer. Buyers rely on reputation to get you onto the list, then on individual behaviour to decide who wins.

The Buyer Revolution research: five findings

What buyers told us

88.2%

prioritise reputation when considering a new provider

68.8%

say personalised communication builds more trust than corporate messaging

64.7%

look for demonstrable experience

61.8%

say understanding alignment with their needs is key

20.6%

said specialisation mattered, and just 14.7% cited longevity of operation

What this means for sellers

"Established in 1974" is not the differentiator you think. Under 15% of buyers care how long you have been trading. Reputation matters enormously, but they mean how you are spoken about now, not how long you have existed.
Corporate voice actively costs you trust. More than two thirds say personalised communication builds more of it. Brand messaging gets you considered; a person gets you chosen.
Show the work. Demonstrable experience beats claimed specialisation by three to one. Case detail, named applications and evidence do the job that adjectives do not.

Common questions

So does brand not matter?
It matters for getting considered. Reputation is the single highest scoring factor at 88.2%. What it will not do is win the decision on its own once you are on the list.
How do we make communication feel personal at scale?
Start by removing what makes it feel corporate. Most personalisation problems are not a technology gap, they are a template that was never written by anyone who talks to customers.
What counts as demonstrable experience?
A named application, a measurable outcome and someone willing to say so. Not a client logo wall, and not the phrase "trusted partner".
